Reserves win Herts Intermediate Cup
2 v 1
Cookey, Medfai
30/03/11: The reserves won the Herts Intermediate Cup for the first time in the club's history, beating Cheshunt reserves 2-1 after a dramatic end to the game. The match took place at the County Ground, Letchworth.
We started the game well and within minutes a close range Hakim Medfai shot skimmed the crossbar to nearly give us the perfect start. After a competitive opening spell, Cheshunt then did the same and also had a shot kept out by the woodwork. We did take the lead when Danny Gruar set up Tony Cookey who had beaten the Cheshunt defence. Cookey kept his composure and slotted home to make it 1-0 at half time.
Cheshunt came out in the second half and pressed for the equaliser, but our defensive unit was excellent all night and continued to break up the Cheshunt attacks. We could have doubled our lead when Cookey again beat the Cheshunt defence, this time from a fantastic long throw from goalkeeper Tom Le Tissier. However, the Cheshunt keeper made a good save to keep the score at 1-0.
As the game went into stoppage time, Cheshunt threw bodies forward and got their reward as they equalised from close range to make it 1-1 with less than a minute remaining. We could not have responded to this any better, and the attitude and work rate that we had shown all night paid off as we went straight up the other end and scored the winner. A great Hakim Medfai shot floated into the top corner to bring the cup home on a fantastic night for the club. Well done to manager Chris Phillips and all involved.
